In 2011, Coach Kiernan was selected as the Orange County Register and Los Angeles Times Coach of the Year as well as the CIF Division 1AA Coach of the Year and the National High School Coaches Association National Coach of the Year.

In 11 years at Mater Dei, Coach Kiernan's teams are 316-43 and he owns a 806-146 career record as a high school coach. In 2011 Mater Dei became the first girls basketball team in five years to finish No. 1 in the USA Today Super 25 in consecutive seasons, and the newspaper also named Coach Kiernan its National Coach of the Year in 2010. Further, in 2006 Coach Kiernan was named the WBCA High School Coach of the Year.

While at Troy High School Coach Kiernan had 24 of his players go on to play college basketball and has sent 25 Mater Dei players to the college ranks. Kiernan was also 110-79 as the head coach at Cypress College, giving him an overall record of 916-225.
